Transforming teaching at Collège La Cité: a skills-based approach to quality education (F/SI)
In 2016, Collège La Cité embarked on a fundamental institutional transformation using a coherent, rigorous and creative approach. This transformation process has been ongoing for seven years and is still ongoing. All post-secondary programs offered at La Cité have been transformed to incorporate a skills-based approach. This major strategic project in teaching innovation has mobilized more than 500 employees and benefited thousands of students and employers in all sectors. By implementing the most far-reaching changes at the college, La Cité aimed to achieve three goals:
- Better meet the needs of the labour market and offer stimulating programs focused on the skills needed for employment;
- Enhance the student experience through authentic learning from day one;
- Promote teaching approaches based on experiences that foster student success.
The panel we propose will begin with a presentation of the vision, objectives and methodology used to bring about this fundamental transformation applied to all curricula. We will then examine the performance indicators developed to measure the degree of achievement, to demonstrate the positive impact on student success and on the satisfaction of both teachers and employers. Two teachers, one graphic design teacher and one teacher of English as a second language, will join us to talk about their experience with this process and the new possibilities for staff, students and the community.
