Leadership of Academic Schools Renewal Project: LASR (E/SI)

May 1, 2024 10:15 - 11:15 Macleod Hall DView map

RRC Polytech implemented a restructuring of the leadership model within the academic schools in 2023. The restructuring included the introduction of a new position to the Polytech (Associate Dean) in each school and a significant increase in the number of Chairs (18 to 60) while maintaining the existing budget. The guiding principles of this restructuring included maximizing support for students and faculty through smaller academic units focused on teaching and learning excellence, consistent job descriptions to ensure clarity of responsibility, and organizational sustainability. This sustainable leadership model increased capacity in the areas of faculty development and support, program development and renewal, ability to action EDI plans and to infuse Indigenous culture and knowledge into curriculum. Operationalizing this restructure included extensive coordination of multiple hiring panels to ensure consistent assessment of candidates during the hiring process and developing an innovative group onboarding approach. This new leadership model enhances the Polytech’s ability to be more agile in meeting the needs of students, industry, community partners, and government while improving the work and learning experience. The early results of this new structure indicate that the Polytech is better positioned to provide sustainable education in key areas to help promote economic growth and justice across the Province of Manitoba, and to achieve established strategic priorities which include transforming the Polytech’s learning model, honouring our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion while deepening partnerships with industry. This session focuses on lessons learned while implementing a significant organizational change.
