Welcome and Opening Keynote: Annie Battiste

Annie, a Mi'kmaw woman and member of the Potlotek First Nation, is deeply committed to advancing social justice and fostering reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. With a diverse skill set encompassing public speaking, cultural competency, program development, and strategic planning, Annie holds both a bachelor's and master’s degree in Education from the University of Saskatchewan.

As an educator at heart, she has embraced her passion by currently serving as an Assistant Professor in L'nu Studies at Cape Breton University. Annie's professional journey is firmly rooted in the principles of antiracism, the exploration of Indigenous Peoples' histories in Canada, and the unwavering commitment to reconciliation as a guiding force in all her endeavors.
