The Living Classroom: A Community-Based Learning Model
This presentation discusses the collaborative relationship of Six Nations Polytechnics (SNP) Health Services programs with Six Nations Health Services, focusing on the clinical training of Personal Support Workers in community. By training learners in the community, SNP promotes experiential learning, enhances community knowledge, relationships, responsibility and cultural safety. To further this community-based collaborative learning approach, SNP is developing a Living Classroom at the Iroquois Lodge Nursing Home. This classroom will be a learning space for staff and students in the home where they will be able to engage directly with their environment, applying clinical knowledge to the practical setting. The Living Classroom model aligns with Indigenous ways of learning, emphasizing experiential learning, using local resources and knowledge, active engagement, relationships, mentorship, community involvement, and collaboration. This innovative model transforms traditional educational methods, creating a dynamic experience that aims to prepare students with cultural safety, community knowledge, social skills and enhanced clinical skills to best meet the health care needs of the community.
